Job Searching
I graduated from Uni over a year ago and it is tough finding a job. Yay on me for getting out of school during a Recession! (No, not really).
I sometimes joke with my parents that it's my fault for not failing subjects at Uni so I would have stayed back an extra semester (or two). Look who's laughing now..(some uni friends are, LOL).
So what can a Uni Graduate, with only 3 months experience in Marketing do to make her more attractive to an employer? Right now, should I be concentrating on only getting my foot in the door of ANY company? And then getting the experience in an office environment and see what opportunities may arise from the job?
A employment consultant gave me a good wake up call today (albeit, after seeing me all flustered and stressed) that beggars can not be choosers. Yes, I always thought I had that down pact, but..I guess I was just being me.. being too stubborn to recognise that times have changed and we need to adapt or be made redundant (oh dear, starting to sound a bit Marketing here..)
This blog is a hobby of mine. But it is also a way for me to express myself, my thoughts, frustrations.. and from now, my (scary) journey to find a job! Don't worry, the main idea was to always be a makeup review blog.. but I will chronicle my quest to be in the workforce!
So what am I currently doing if I am not working? I am in the midst of a Certificate II in Business. I know what everyone is all thinking ("Don't you have a degree?"), but what hurt can furthering my skills and knowledge do?
I'm very excited and stoked about this course. It runs for 4 weeks and so far 2 of the trainers (as they preferred to be called) have been excellent. One trainer (and for anonymity purposes, we will call him M) we had for 2 weeks, and I have to say, he is brilliant. He was passionate about his job, was caring to the students (we weren't the usual he would get, whom were attentive and wanted to learn - funny that) and he was a very interactive teacher. At the end of the period he taught us for, we gave him chocolates and a card as a thank you because he was a great teacher. It was surprising to hear that it was the first card/gift he ever received and he thought it was sweet (peace out).
What did I learn from the first 2 weeks of the course? Well, I can now identify what questions to ask an employer about the job (from the job description), ways to phrase questions, being prepared for an interview. Oh! The mock interviews were great fun.. some of the other girls didn't want me as a mock interviewer because I "ask too many hard questions" (their words, not mine.. but they said it was good that I was hard ballin' them).
I guess what I want from this course is further my computer skills (mainly Excel and Access) just to be competent for an Admin role. I have been in customer service for a financial institution (office environment woohoo!), I have had experienced as an executive assistant ... maybe I should just word my CV better? Seek.com.au has not been my friend lately.. and receiving rejection emails is starting to become a norm.
To recap, I must always remember to be humble and that no job or opportunity is too small to give a chance. Every man and his dog has a degree.. what makes me different?
Until next time...
